The Effect of Color in a Room - How Colors Influence Our Perception and Mood

Colors play a central role in our daily lives and influence our perception in many ways. Our visual world is permeated by a wide range of colors that we can perceive with our eyes. These colors not only shape our environment but also have a strong emotional effect on us.

The deliberate use of color can attract attention, strengthen brand recognition, and even influence purchasing decisions. However, the effect of a color does not depend solely on its hue; factors such as saturation, brightness, quantity, surrounding colors, and the material also play a crucial role.

The perception of color varies from person to person, which means it has different effects on viewers. What appears dark blue to one person may be perceived as black by another. Additionally, room size, ceiling height, and surface texture significantly influence how colors and the space itself affect us. It is therefore possible to alter the effect of a room through skillful color selection: to make it appear visually lower, higher, wider, or narrower.

Besides the effect of color on spatial proportions, it is also important to consider its emotional and psychological impact on people. Much of this can be traced back to human evolution.

  • Yellow has a cheerful/positive effect on mood.
  • Blue slows the pulse and has a calming effect.
  • Earth tones and natural hues convey a sense of security.
  • Pink represents romance/playfulness
